First, please review the submission guide to learn about the data formats and other requirements. When you are ready to submit your data, use the submission form to upload your files.

The Passive Acoustic Reporting System (PARS) is a centralized database for gathering and sharing passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) detection data generated using a variety of methods, instruments, and software by various government agencies, universities, non-profits and industry partners.

Real-time North Atlantic Right Whale Reporting

For 24-hour reporting of real-time North Atlantic right whale detections, please refer to the Template Datasheet For Real-Time North Atlantic Right Whale Acoustic and Visual Observation Data for the Real-Time NARW Reporting Template and reporting instructions. Please do not submit 24-hour reports through PARS.

What is PARS?

PARS is a centralized data repository for PAM acoustic detection data of marine mammals and other species. Built and managed by the Passive Acoustics Branch at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, PARS was created to support collaborative scientific research, management, and public awareness of marine species through the use of PAM technologies.

How Do I Prepare My Data?

To submit data to PARS, prepare your data using the templates and instructions provided in the PARS Submission Guide.

Each submission includes one or more files containing: metadata about the audio recording and analysis, detection data generated from analysis of that recording, and GPS data for mobile platforms such as ships and gliders.

Templates and requirements (e.g., column names, data formats) for each file type can be found in the submission guide.

Who Can Submit Data?

Anyone who has collected PAM detection data of marine mammals and other species in accordance with standard scientific protocols is encouraged to submit their data to PARS.

PARS welcomes data submissions from a wide range of contributors, including but not limited to:

  • State, federal, tribal, and international government agencies
  • Academic researchers
  • Non-governmental organizations
  • Private industry

If you are unsure, please contact the PARS team for assistance.

How Will My Data Be Used?

All data submitted to PARS will be publicly displayed on the Passive Acoustic Cetacean Map (PACM) and also accessible by request through the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium (NARWC).

NOAA scientists may also be granted access to the PARS database for research and management purposes. In the event PARS data are used in any product generated by NOAA scientists, the contributors of that data will be properly acknowledged and cited for their contributions.
